You’re Cordially Invited tries and fails to blend the comedic talents of Will Ferrell and Reese Witherspoon in a wedding-themed romp. The film centers on Jim (Ferrell), a widowed father, and Margot (Witherspoon), a reality TV executive, who mistakenly double-book weddings at a quaint island venue. What ensues is a series of pranks and mishaps as both parties vie for the perfect wedding.
Ferrell plays a familiar, bumbling, overprotective dad with badly dyed hair, delivering moments that elicit chuckles but rarely belly laughs. Witherspoon brings a touch of charm to the career-driven sister of the bride. As the two bicker and banter, they develop an on-screen chemistry that sadly never pays off into something meaningful. The supporting cast, including Geraldine Viswanathan as Jenni and Meredith Hagner as Neve, provide competent performances but are often overshadowed by the central duo’s antics.
Director Nicholas Stoller, known for Forgetting Sarah Marshall, leans heavily on slapstick and situational comedy, with scenes involving alligator encounters and cake catastrophes. While these setups have potential, they frequently culminate in predictable outcomes, leaving the audience craving more inventive humor.
This film has its moments of amusement but lacks the cohesive spark needed to make it memorable or truly fun. For fans of Ferrell and Witherspoon, it might serve as a mild diversion, but don’t expect to RSVP for a second viewing.
